The Spirit Catches You And You Fall Down Book Analysis

Caitlin Waldrop Social Work 350 Spring 2016 â€Å"The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down†: Book Analysis Cultural Competency Jeanine Hilt was exceptional for her appreciation of the Lee family and attempts to become well-versed in Hmong culture. She demonstrated a willingness to learn from them and admirably strong commitment to advocacy on their behalf. Because of her determination to understand their background and their personal lives, she gained their respect and formed a very strong rapport with them. More people, and especially more social workers, should take that kind of approach to clients. Putting the advice of Sukey Waller to use was an incredibly helpful step and recruiting May Ying to be the â€Å"cultural broker† and interpreter for Fadiman really led to substantial progress. Closer collaboration between the departments of the hospital may have led to a more prompt address by such a route. One wonders why Sukey Waller was not consulted sooner. The importance of empathy in any helping profession, medical or social, cannot be overstated. The workers that exemplified it in their practice did the best that they could with their limited resources. Social Environment The organizational ties that the Lees had to the hospital and its staff were characterized by miscommunication, condescension on part of many of the professionals, and mistrust on both sides. Eddie and Mickey and evaluates the situation Essay Example For Students

Eddie and Mickey and evaluates the situation Essay At this point Mickey and Eddie have their backs to either wing standing opposite each other, the two spotlights still separating them. Then Mickey continues, Ive been thinkin again Eddie. You an Linda were friends when she first got pregnant, werent y? at this point Mickeys voice is raised and as he talks he shakes the gun at Eddie. Letting out a desperate cry Eddie whales Mickey! He cant believe what he is hearing. Mickeys next line is Does my child belong to you as well as everythin else? Does she Eddie? Does she? as he says this Mickey will burst into tears, saying this really touched a nerve showing how desperate he is. Mickey edges forward threatening Eddie and he steps back backing away showing Mickey is the stronger party in the argument. Eddie replies with a holler No for Gods sake! Then two policemen enter from the back of the auditorium one goes down one side of the theatre, they both squat in position on the stairs at the front sides of the stage, their pistols pointed at Mickey and his trembling gun warning him to put it down. One talks through a loudhailer pleading with Mickey to put the gun down and not to do anything stupid. Mickey continues talking to Eddie dismissing their presence, he tells Eddie he doesnt even know what he is doing, he was going to shoot him but he cant even pluck up the courage to do that, he doesnt even know if the gun is loaded. The policemen edge forward up on to the stage assuring Mickey that everything will be all right. Mickeys voice is startling with a slight sense of nervousness coming from him and you can see the perspiration dripping from both Eddie and Mickeys brows, the police do all they can in their power to protect Eddie. The two policemen are dressed in traditional police uniforms. Mrs Johnstone slowly enters through a door in the backdrop at the back of the stage, which would be the entrance to the Town Hall. She cautiously walks down between the chairs where Eddies audience were sitting earlier; she looks at both Eddie and Mickey and evaluates the situation. She is on edge not knowing what to do for the best. Mickey. Mickey. Dont shoot him Mickey. She pleads with her son. Mrs Johnstone is wearing a long dark coat down to her ankles it is open showing a pink blouse and knee length navy skirt, her shoes are black along with her stocking. She has mascara tears down her face to show she has been crying, I think Willy Russell wants the audience to feel sorry for her and the predicament she is in and what to do in the best interest of her boys. Mickey tells his mother to go away be she wont and walks closer to them, Mickey. Dont shoot Eddie. Hes your brother. You had a twin brother. I couldnt afford to keep the both of you. His mother couldnt have kids. I agreed to give one of you away! I would have her pausing when she says Dont shoot Eddie (pause) Hes your brother. The rest of it she would say with only a couple of breaths as though she was pushing the truth out even thought she never wanted it to come out into the open. Her superstitious beliefs have stopped her from telling them in the past, but she needed to try and protect her children. She looks at them both but cant look them in the eye as she feels like she has let them down. .u41e93441afdd3cb4e75c6a66b916ba14 , .u41e93441afdd3cb4e75c6a66b916ba14 .postImageUrl , .u41e93441afdd3cb4e75c6a66b916ba14 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u41e93441afdd3cb4e75c6a66b916ba14 , .u41e93441afdd3cb4e75c6a66b916ba14:hover , .u41e93441afdd3cb4e75c6a66b916ba14:visited , .u41e93441afdd3cb4e75c6a66b916ba14:active { border:0!important; } .u41e93441afdd3cb4e75c6a66b916ba14 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u41e93441afdd3cb4e75c6a66b916ba14 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u41e93441afdd3cb4e75c6a66b916ba14:active , .u41e93441afdd3cb4e75c6a66b916ba14:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u41e93441afdd3cb4e75c6a66b916ba14 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u41e93441afdd3cb4e75c6a66b916ba14 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u41e93441afdd3cb4e75c6a66b916ba14 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u41e93441afdd3cb4e75c6a66b916ba14 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u41e93441afdd3cb4e75c6a66b916ba14:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u41e93441afdd3cb4e75c6a66b916ba14 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u41e93441afdd3cb4e75c6a66b916ba14 .u41e93441afdd3cb4e75c6a66b916ba14-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u41e93441afdd3cb4e75c6a66b916ba14:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Language Loss - Language Revival EssayMickey explodes and stands staring at Eddie taking short but evil glances at his Mother You! he screams You! Why didnt you give me away! he now stands glaring at her, almost uncontrollable with rage. I could have been I could have been him! And on the word him Mickey full of anger waves the gun carelessly at Eddie. The gun explodes and Eddie falls dramatically to the ground. Mickey turns to the police screaming the word no! They open fire two guns explode blowing Mickey away. Everything now is quiet, Mrs Johnstone falls to the ground in between the two brothers who lay silently upon the floor in disbelief of the situation, she clutches them both in her hands with her head hung glancing at them both. Linda runs franticly down the aisle from the back of the auditorium and inspects Mickey first the Eddie in floods of tears she is taken to one side by a policemen and comforted. All the lights go dim as the Narrator appears and one spotlight illuminates him, he sums up the ending by saying And do we blame superstition for what came to pass? Or could it be what we, the English, have come to known as class?  He then goes on by saying what he opens with at the beginning of the play  Did you ever hear the story of the Johnstone twins,  As like each other as two new pins,  How one was kept and one given away,  How they were born, and they dies, on the self same day? The light on the Narrator dims as he walks off and Mrs Johnstone is put into the spotlight she now starts singing still kneeling on the floor holding the bodies of her sons. At the start of the second verse she stands up slowly, as she sings she uses her hands to express herself she walks right to the front of the stage with her arms out in front then up above her as the song ends and the curtain drops. While she is still singing in the background the bodies of her sons are put on stretchers and covered up with black sheets, undertakers then carry them off going opposite ways exiting on both sides of the stage.

Nazi Germany Essays - Adolf Hitler, Weimar Republic, Nazi Propaganda

Nazi Germany After World War I, or The Great War as it was known back then, Germany was left devastated both financially and, since German propaganda had not prepared the nation for defeat, emotionally, resulting in a sense of injured German national pride. But because Germany was ?stabbed in the back? by its leftwing politicians, Communists, and Jews, or more colourfully known as the ?November Criminals', it was still widely believed that Germany had not truly been defeated. When a new government, the Weimar Republic, tried to establish a democratic course, extreme political parties from both the right and the left struggled violently for control. ?The new regime could neither handle the depressed economy nor the rampant lawlessness and disorder.? Amongst all this confusion and squabbling, one party and one man seemed to stand out. The man was Adolf Hitler and the party was the German Workers' Party (DAP) later to be called the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP) or more widely known as the Nazi Party's. The German Workers' Party (DAP) was just another party espousing a right-wing ideology, like many other similar groups of demobilized soldiers. However this simplicity of the party would have been the attribute which would have attracted Hitler the most. This allowed Hitler to pour his beliefs into the party and mold it into his image. Soon after his joining of the party, Hitler renamed it to the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP) but even then it was merely a gang of unemployed soldiers who's ?spirits had been crushed and who's guns had rusted away.? But after Hitler's first public presentation, in a beer cellar, things started to change drastically. With the money from the first presentation used to buy more advertising and print leaflets, the Nazi Party was starting to act and look like a real party. Hitler's beliefs of national pride, militarism, commitment to the Volk and a racially ?pure? Germany as well as anti-Semitism soon attracted supporters by the hundred. Although the German Workers' Party started out as a small right-wing organisation, with Hitler's joining, it gained support. The German Workers' Party now featured Hitler as the main attraction at its meetings. In his speeches Hitler railed against the Treaty of Versailles and delivered anti-Semitic tirades, blaming the Jews for Germany's problems. At this point in time the Nazi Party's ideals seemed to attract members who were part of the labour sector in society or workers. These were the men and women who worked in industrial institution such as factories. These people were often threatened by unstable employment and therefore pay, but Hitler offered stable employment and pay. The Nazi Party's policies based on anti-Semitism, Lebensraum (Livingspace), economic and social reforms?including nationalization of the trusts also attracted the workers. Times were changing, however, and Hitler was ready to make the next step in consolidation his power. Hitler's extraordinary public speaking skills were utilised to gather supporters for the Nazi Party. The mid 1920s were a tense and strained period in which much happened. The SA (Sturm-Abteilung or Stormtroopers) had been well established and its numbers were increasing steadily. The swastika had been introduced and was now widely used to represent the Nazi Party. The Nazi Party, now notorious as being the direct opposite of the Communist Party, gained the support of many fearful middle-class Germans who knew of the ever possible threat of a Communist revolution. As hyperinflation set in Germany, ?pockets of people were empty but people stood by their government, admiring its defiance of the French.? But in September of 1923, the German government made a fateful decision to resume making payments. Bitter resentment and unrest swelled among the people, inciting extremist political groups to action and quickly bringing Germany to the brink of chaos. The Nazis and other similar groups now felt the time was right to strike. The German state of Bavaria where the Nazis were based was a hotbed of groups opposed to the democratic government in Berlin. By now, November 1923, the Nazis, with 55,000 followers, were the biggest and best organized. With Nazi members demanding action, Hitler knew he had to act or risk losing the leadership of his Party. This was the Munich, or Beer Hall, Putsch. In the 1920s the Nazi Party became confident enough to attempt a coup. The Putsch was an utter disaster and after his release from confinement, Hitler vowed that he would take power legitimately and not by force. After the ban on the party was raised in 1925, Hitler sought to consolidated the support from the working class by increasing the anti-Semitic propaganda and further

Thinking and Writing about Art History specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This work of art was created in Thailand in the fourteenth century. Its height is approximately fifty inches. The name of the sculptor remains anonymous to art historians and archeologists. The subject of this artistic piece is SiddhÄ rtha Gautama, the originator and spiritual leader of Buddhism. His legs are crossed and one his hands nearly touches the earth. This gesture has to symbolize Buddha’s victory over Mara. One can only deduce the true purpose of this work. Probably, this work of art strives to demonstrate the placidity of Buddha and his serenity. Similarly, the message of this sculpture may not be clear to the viewers at once. Probably, this author tried to show that only by following the principle of Buddhism one can achieve peace with the others and with oneself. To some degree, this statue demonstrates how an enlightened person can look like. By creating this statue, the author tried to set an example for the viewers. Yet, this is just a conjecture. This Seated Buddha was created during the so-called Sukhothai period. This period which began in the early fourteenth century, and this work has several elements of the sculptural style which evolved during that time. Namely, we should speak about slightly elongated head of Buddha, placid facial expression, and very smooth skin. It should be noted that during that time, the statues of Buddha were usually cast out of metal and at that time it was a real departure from the convention.Advertising Looking for essay on art and design? In part, my response can be explained by his posture and facial expression. Unfortunately, we do not know whether this artistic piece fits into the career of the sculptor or not. Moreover, there is very little information about the life of this sculptor. It is quite possible that he relied on both visual and literary sources. For example, the depictions of Buddha are present in numerous illustrated manuscripts and drawings of the twelfth and thirteenth period. We can mention such sources as the so-called Pali texts which explain how the statues of Buddha should look like (Kislenko, 81). It is worth mentioning that these Pali texts present a very detailed portrayal of Buddha; there are many metaphoric descriptions of his face, body, feet, skin, and so forth (Kislenko, 81). Thus, the sculptor could have relied on wealthy literary tradition. Currently , there are no documents of that period which discuss this work of art. One cannot tell how this piece was perceived by the contemporaries. Yet, we know that this sculpture was cast in during the time when the Sukhothai Kingdom was very powerful (Kislenko, 10). Such sculptures could represent not only Buddha, but also the rulers of the country. Overall, this work of art demonstrates that such religion as Buddhism played a very important role in the life of the the Sukhothai Kingdom. At that time, the teachings of SiddhÄ rtha Gautama became prevalent in the intellectual circles of the Sukhothai Kingdom. This philosophy truly became the mainstream ideology. Even now its importance cannot be underestimated.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Seated Buddha. Thinking and Writing about Art History specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More It is possible to compare this Seated Buddha with other sculptures created earlier. For ex ample, one can draw parallels between this statue and Amida Buddha created in the thirteenth-century Japan. They are similar in terms of posture and facial expression of SiddhÄ rtha Gautama. Nonetheless, the Japanese structure differs in terms of technique, since it is made of carved wooden pieces which were joined together. Apart from that, the hand of Amida Buddha makes a gesture which symbolizes peace. Thus, the statue that we are discussing emphasizes the perfection and power of Buddha, whereas its Japanese counterpart focuses on his peacefulness. These are the main differences between them. These distinctions can be explained by the fact that the two sculptors perceived this person in different ways. At this point, art historians do not know very much as to how this sculpture was created. One can see that this statue consists out several metal casts which were joined together. Yet, it is very difficult to determine the methods that the sculptor applied while creating this art istic piece. Moreover, it is unclear if he/she made some preliminary steps in order to better visualize the image of Buddha. These questions are still of great interest to modern art historians and archeologists. This sculpture is a prominent example of Thai art. It shows that during the Sukhothai period this culture achieved enormous degree of sophistication. Moreover, this piece demonstrates the extent to which Buddhism shaped the identity of Thai people. In this case, Buddha symbolizes an ideal which everyone must try to attain. Finally, this artistic piece can be praised for its meticulous metalwork which is very difficult to surpass.Advertising Looking for essay on art and design? Let's see if we can help you! SAMURAI AND KNIGHTS essays

SAMURAI AND KNIGHTS essays The Medieval Era saw the emergence of two distinct warrior classes in Europe and Japan. These were the Samurais and the Knights. They were marked in history as a code for courage and sacrifice. Never had the world seen such courageous and dedicated military class before them. Although, they represented two different cultures; they were similar in several ways. The Samurais were the military class warriors of Japan. These warriors acted as retainers to greater lords, fighters, and the enforcers of policy and morality. Their importance and influence grew during the Heian Period (794-1185) when the powerful landowners hired them for the protection of their properties. The knights on the other hand were the most significant figure of the feudal system of the European Middle Ages. The word knight derived from the Old English word cniht, the equivalent of the Latin word caballarius, meaning horseman. The Knights duty was very much similar like the Samurais. They were hired to protect land and the people. Ironically, the Samurais and the Knights came from noble families, since horses, armor, and weapons were costly and their use required long training. They stood at the top of the social hierarchy and had many privileges. On the other hand, they was supposed to be a good example to the lower classes and had to follow the principles of th eir religion. The samurai's and Knights most important principles are unlimited loyalty to his master, extreme self-discipline, and brave, selfless behavior. These great warriors had one aim; to serve their lord and be successful. The Japanese Samurai and Western European Knights were similar in their approach to conflict. They fought for their position status and to gain ones aim. A Knights appearance on a battlefield was very similar to that of a Samurai. A Knight in armor would present a very strange appear...
